Four essential tips to keep your phone cool as summer finally returns

The hot temperatures seem to finally bring some cheer this summer bursts of 30C next week.

While it will be a sigh of relief for Brits, the good weather may not last long.

However, during the warmer times one thing that is felt is your equipment.

Modern smartphones are fully equipped to deal with overheating and will go into standby mode if things get too hot, so your device has a chance to cool down.

It is important that your phone is not exposed to extremely high temperatures too often as this can damage the battery overtime, ultimately costing you money for expensive upgrades.

Here are four essential tips to keep your iPhone or Android device cool during the hottest weather.

Avoid direct sunlight

It may sound obvious, but the first thing you should do is keep your phone out of direct sunlight.

This is easily forgotten when you’re doing things like driving and it’s cradled – especially if you’re using it for maps that will make it heat up faster.

The same applies if you are going to the beach, keep your phone in the shade under a towel or in a bag.

Toggle background app refresh

Background App Refresh keeps your apps up to date in the background when you’re not using them, for example by loading the latest WhatsApp messages you’ve received.

But if your phone is already starting to heat up, you’ll want to keep processes to a minimum, so you might want to disable background app refresh.

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

Extend your iPhone’s battery life

Android doesn’t call its version of background app refresh, but the same process can be done.

It varies from model to model, but for most Android phones you can find the option in Settings > Apps > All Apps.

Remove the case

Your case can be like a coat for your phone.

So naturally, it might be a good idea to remove it – if you’re sure you won’t damage the device by dropping it, of course.

Turn off your phone

The best way to keep your phone cool is to turn it off completely.

In this way all processes and the battery are shut down.

This obviously leaves you with no connection for a while, so it might not be the best permanent solution, but it’s certainly worth it if your phone is already too hot to the touch.

Alternatively, you can simply stop using your phone for five minutes to give it a chance to cool down.

Why do batteries deteriorate over time?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Most devices run on lithium-ion batteries
  • Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold becomes less
  • This means you have to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
  • Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
  • To charge a battery, ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
  • When you use a battery, it moves in the opposite direction
  • This process wears down the structure of the anode, reducing its ability to function properly
  • But the process also creates a kind of salt on the cathode during charging
  • As this build-up increases, the battery will accept less charge over time
  • It is estimated that between 500 and 1000 full charge cycles will reduce the maximum battery capacity by approximately 20%
