The Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2) is nearing its fourth birthday, and we expect to see some big deals happen this year, especially once Amazon Prime Day kicks off, which we expect could happen in the weeks future. We’ve seen the headset go as low as $99 by the expected date of Prime Day 2024, and that kind of price is the only time you should still think about getting one.
That’s because, like any console that’s been around for a while, buying one at a discount means you’ll be missing out on some of the best games and new features 2024 has to offer so far. Several upcoming Meta Quest games will be Quest 3 exclusives, such as Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded, Alien: Isolation, and Batman Arkham Shadow, to name a few.

FOMO is a real thing and seeing so many new Meta Quest games come out without Quest 2 support can make you regret your purchase. As a gamer, there are only a few reasons I would recommend getting a Quest 2 at a crazy discount this year.
First, it’s a great way to get into VR gaming without spending a lot of money. Quest 2 still runs 99% of Meta Quest games, incl everything of the best Meta Quest games. If you’re not currently a VR gamer and just want to try it out, this is a great way to do it.
I play VR games with my son all the time and he uses a Meta Quest 2. We have yet to come across a game we want to play that doesn’t support a Quest 2. While it will happen eventually, the vast majority of games play in good.
If you think you like the experience, I’d recommend picking up a new headband and face pad from our list of the best Quest 2 accessories.
Other people might want to consider a possible $99 Quest 2 as a secondary headset for local multiplayer or even as a dedicated PCVR headset. The Quest 2 can be used as a SteamVR headset indefinitely, even when Meta eventually ends support for it in the future, giving the device an extended lifespan.
This would give you access to Half-Life: Alyx and many other games that aren’t on Quest at all, though it won’t solve the problem of giving access to Meta-developed titles like Batman Arkham Shadows since it’s Quest 3 – exclusive.
Not only that, but mixed reality content is only available on Quest Pro and Quest 3. Quest 2 has pass-through video, so you can see the room around you when you put the headset on, but it’s very low-res and only in black and white.
PCVR players may want to consider Quest 2 as a free option.
All the latest mixed reality and pass quality improvements have been made to the Quest 3 as the headset has significantly higher resolution cameras and also offers full color video pass-through vision. In other words, while the Quest 3 is a mixed reality headset that helps bring the virtual and real worlds together, the Quest 2 is very much a VR-only headset that will make you feel more isolated.
If newer games or mixed reality sound like things you want — but still don’t want to shell out $500 for a regular Quest 3 — Meta is said to be launching Meta Quest 3s later this year.
That headset is supposed to pack the same powerful processor as the more expensive Quest 3 — meaning it would support all Quest 3-exclusive games like the ones mentioned above — but it would pack with next-gen lenses. the latest Quest 2 and some other cost-savings to keep the price around $299 or less.
That’s obviously a lot more than a potential $99 Quest 2 sale, but if you can hold onto it for a few years and still have access to all the latest games, it might be worth the wait.
